Cortical visual impairment (CVI) has been identified as the leading cause of visual impairment in children in the Western world. As increasing numbers of children are diagnosed with this condition, including many who are deafblind, the importance of understanding CVI, its implications and the development of effective educational approaches has become critical.

Participants will demonstrate the following outcomes and indicators of performance regarding their understanding of CVI and its effects on development and learning:

  • Gain knowledge of incidence and characteristics of CVI;
  • Gain recognition of CVI as a potentially unidentified and unaddressed characteristic of students with severe and multiple disabilities
  • Becomes familiar with an assessment protocol based on the work of Dr. Christine Roman, Ph.D. and
  • Review case studies that demonstrate interventions that have improved the visual function of children with CVI and other disabilities.
